Gamay

The black grape of the Beaujolais — juicy and fragrant, usually with soft tannins. Banished from the Côte d'Or by ducal ordinance in 1395, it found its home on the granite hills to the south.

In 1395 Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, banned Gamay from the duchy in favour of Pinot. It is, like Chardonnay, an offspring of Pinot and Gouais Blanc.
