Sauvignon Blanc

A white grape with possible origins in central or south-western France. Its aromatic dry wines and its capacity for sweet wines make it more versatile than a single flavour stereotype suggests.

Origins and the vine

Pl@ntGrape leaves two possible French origin areas open and describes a close genetic relationship with Savagnin rather than stating a confirmed parentage here. Small bunches and berries are associated with distinctive young-wine aromas. The sheet identifies broom flowers, blackcurrant and boxwood among the possible expressions, while emphasising variation with site, season and cultivation.

From grape to wine

The catalogue describes a vigorous vine requiring attention to canopy density and bunch microclimate. It is susceptible to grey rot, powdery mildew and trunk diseases. Its account of wine potential covers both dry whites and sweet wines from late harvests or noble rot; it is not a claim that every region permits every style.
