Barbera
Barbera is a red grape associated with Monferrato and widely cultivated in Piedmont. The nursery profile also records its presence in Lombardy and other Italian regions.
The vine and its bunch
Rauscedo describes five-lobed leaves and medium cylindrical-pyramidal bunches. The berries are elliptical, with thin waxy skins and juicy flesh. Bunch compactness matters in damp conditions because the profile identifies susceptibility to bunch rot.
More than one wine style
The technical description covers fruity wines for relatively early drinking as well as fuller examples capable of ageing. Acidity is a recurring feature. Vineyard vigour, crop level and selection affect the result, so Barbera should not receive a fixed body or tannin score independent of site and winemaking.
