Pineau d'Aunis

A Loire Valley black grape known for a peppery scent. It makes light, pale reds and, in the Coteaux du Vendômois, a pale salmon-coloured *gris* rosé that must be made from it alone. Its French area fell from 1,741 ha in 1958 to 448 ha in 2018.

The gris of Vendôme

In the Coteaux du Vendômois, vins gris are made only from Pineau d'Aunis by direct pressing. They are pale with salmon tints, and the appellation file says the grape gives them a peppery scent. These grey wines were nearly half the appellation's volume in 2008, when the vineyard covered about 130 ha. The area became an AOVDQS in 1968 and an AOC in 2001.

Pl@ntGrape notes that Pineau d'Aunis gives light, pale wines for rosé or sparkling bases, and that quality drops quickly as yields rise. It is also among the varieties regulated in Anjou.
