Persan

A rare black grape of Savoie and Isère that makes tannic wines with good acidity and ageing potential. Almost lost by 2000, with 3 ha left in France, it has started to come back. DNA shows Savagnin as one of its parents.

Near extinction and return

Persan is found in Savoie and Isère and is listed among the Savoie appellation's varieties. VIVC gives its pedigree as an unknown parent × Savagnin, confirmed by markers. Its bunches and berries are small, and it makes tannic wines with good acidity that suit ageing.

French plantings fell from 201 ha in 1958 to 18 ha in 1979 and 3 ha in 2000, then rose to 20 ha in 2018. One clone (1110) is certified, and a conservatory of about 15 clones was planted in Savoie in 1999.
