Poulsard

A native Jura grape with ellipsoid berries, giving pale, light, aromatic reds of great finesse, sometimes onion-skin in colour. It is one of the three traditional Jura varieties, with Savagnin and Trousseau.

Light red of the Jura

Pl@ntGrape calls Poulsard native to the Jura and, from published genetic analyses, closely related to Rèze. In Arbois, notably at Pupillin, where its deep marl soils on steep slopes suit it, it gives a characteristic light ruby colour and fruity aromas. The Arbois file names Savagnin, Poulsard and Trousseau as the typical Jura varieties, with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir adopted from Burgundy.

The bunches are small and the berries ellipsoid, medium to large. The vine is pruned long and trellised and is particularly susceptible to powdery mildew. French plantings have been steady: 314 ha in 1958 and 257 ha in 2018.
