Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a north-western Italian red grape associated with Piedmont and Valtellina. Its early budbreak and late ripening make site selection especially important.

One variety, several local names

The Italian Vitis Database records Spanna in northern Piedmont, Chiavennasca in Valtellina and Prunent in Val d’Ossola. These names do not create additional varieties. Rauscedo describes substantial variation within the population, including the familiar Lampia material.

A long growing season

The nursery describes medium pyramidal, winged bunches and round berries with a waxy purple skin. Well-exposed hillsides help the late crop ripen. Its general wine description emphasises tannin, body and capacity to develop with ageing; those are tendencies rather than specifications for every bottle.
