Clairette

A white grape originating in Provence. It can produce relatively alcoholic, low-acid whites with apple-like aromas, as well as sparkling or sweet styles under suitable conditions.

Location: France

Origins and the vine

The catalogue describes a vigorous vine suited to short pruning and lean, dry limestone ground. Its semi-upright shoots can be wind-sensitive, making canopy work important. Mature bunch stems become woody, an identification feature distinct from wine taste.

From grape to wine

The sheet records sugar concentration from over-ripening or raisining for sweet styles, alongside dry and sparkling uses. It also notes possible bitterness or a firm finish. Such characteristics describe potential outcomes; they are not a reason to assume every Clairette wine is sweet or made from dried grapes.
