Gros Manseng

A white grape originating in the Pyrenean vineyards. Its sugar-accumulation potential and retained acidity allow both dry and sweet wines.

Location: France

Origins and the vine

The catalogue describes a vigorous and relatively fertile vine, generally pruned long but also capable of short pruning. It has medium bunches and very small berries. Powdery mildew sensitivity and comparatively good resistance to grey rot are noted separately.

From grape to wine

Gros Manseng’s fruit can remain on the vine for sweet-wine production, according to the sheet. Its capacity for high acidity is also useful in dry-wine styles. It is kept separate from Petit Manseng; the similar names and regional association do not establish that their fruit or wine behaviour is identical.
