Aramon

A very productive black grape from the Languedoc. It covered 150,230 ha in France in 1958 and only 1,141 ha in 2018. Its huge berries give pale wines low in sugar.

Rise and fall of a workhorse

Aramon is very productive: large bunches of very large berries, low sugar and little colour. Pl@ntGrape calls its wines 'not very characteristic'. Its French area shows how the Midi's vineyard changed: 150,230 ha in 1958, 63,487 ha in 1979, 11,943 ha in 1998 and 1,141 ha in 2018.

Pl@ntGrape calls it a probable descendant of Gouais Blanc and Ouliven, and VIVC lists Ouliven × Heunisch Weiss (Gouais Blanc) as confirmed by markers. It is one parent of Petit Bouschet, and so a grandparent of Alicante Bouschet.
