Central Otago
Central Otago is New Zealand's southernmost wine region, an inland basin in the rain shadow of the Southern Alps with the country's only semi-continental wine climate. Pinot Noir covered 77% of its 1,932 ha in the GI application. It was registered as a GI on 29 October 2018; its boundary follows the Central Otago District.

Gold-rush country and the 1970s pioneers
Central Otago Winegrowers describes land first used by Māori for hunting, travel and seasonal camps and later by prospectors in the 19th-century gold rush. New Zealand Winegrowers records the region's first gold medal, for a 'Burgundy' in Sydney in 1881, and quotes Romeo Bragato, who in 1895 called the region 'pre-eminently suitable' for winemaking. Stone fruit nevertheless prevailed until a resurgence in the 1950s, followed by the winegrowing pioneers of the 1970s, whose names survive in Chard Farm, Rippon, Black Ridge and Gibbston Valley.
In the GI evidence, IPONZ found the name in national and international wine reference works from at least 1988, and Central Otago wines won the champion wine of the show at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards in 2003, 2010, 2012 and 2014. The GI was filed on 27 July 2017 and registered on 29 October 2018.
Schist, loess and a mountain basin
Central Otago Winegrowers describes a high basin shaped by tectonic forces and enclosed by steep, fault-formed block mountains that cut it off from the sea's moderating influence. The Main Divide of the Southern Alps blocks the westerly winds and their moisture, leaving one of the driest parts of New Zealand, with intense sunlight and low humidity. Beneath the vines lies schist, ancient seabed sediments compressed into a mica and quartz rock; the soils combine weathered schist, wind-blown loess from the ice ages, glacial outwash gravels and alluvial sand, gravel and silt. The GI examiner summarised free-draining gravels, silts and sands with much loess.
Subregions differ. Gibbston, along the Kawarau Gorge, is the highest and ripens latest; Bannockburn, on the south bank of the Kawarau, is among the warmest and driest, harvesting up to a month earlier; Bendigo has stony north-facing slopes; Wānaka is cooler and slightly wetter; and Alexandra, the most southerly, runs to extremes.
Ripeness with natural acidity
The GI evidence links very cold winters, hot summers, cold nights and long dry autumns to grapes that reach high ripeness while keeping natural acidity, and the day-night swing over ripening to varietal aroma, flavour and colour. Central Otago Winegrowers says winegrowing here is 'on the edge of viability' and suits Pinot Noir and vibrant whites. New Zealand Winegrowers describes the Pinot Noir as fragrant and lush, with taut structure, silky texture and marked differences between subregions; the Chardonnay as citrus and mineral, tightly structured; and the aromatic whites as dry to sweet. Producers emphasise hand work in the vineyard and a high share of organic growing.
GI 1007 and its Pinot Noir
Central Otago is registered GI no. 1007, with renewal due in 2032; IPONZ found its boundary in line with the Central Otago District. The evidence gave 1,932 ha, 77% Pinot Noir, an average vineyard of 9 ha and over 150 producers, and sales of 1,645,358 litres from the 2015 vintage. Central Otago Winegrowers represents growers in Cromwell, Queenstown, Wānaka, Gibbston, Bannockburn, Bendigo, Alexandra and the surrounding area; these subregions were not among the 18 GI applications of 2017. Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, rosé and traditional-method sparkling wine complete the range, and labels follow the 85% origin rule.
