Sangiovese
Sangiovese is a red grape central to the wines of Tuscany and other parts of central Italy. Its many local names and biotypes should be distinguished from separate varieties.
Brunello and Prugnolo gentile
The University of Pisa account in the Italian Vitis Database recognises Brunello, Prugnolo gentile, Morellino and Corsica’s Nielluccio among its synonyms. It also warns that some expanded Morellino names refer to different material. Historical origin and the derivation of the name remain uncertain.
Variation within the vine
Rauscedo describes considerable differences in leaf, bunch and berry size between biotypes. Berries are generally ovoid, with waxy skin. Dry, relatively warm growing conditions and restrained fertility favour ripening. The general wine description is tannic and substantial, with youthful fruit developing during ageing.
