Grillo

Grillo is a white grape associated with western Sicily and the wine traditions around Marsala. It is used for dry whites as well as wines intended for other production methods.

Berries and identity

Rauscedo describes medium cylindrical-conical bunches and relatively large round berries with thick skins. The Italian Vitis Database’s Catarratto account identifies Catarratto and Zibibbo as Grillo’s parents. That catalogue attribution is retained separately from an independently checked original pedigree study.

Wine and heat

The nursery describes a vigorous vine with tolerance of high temperatures and wines combining structure with floral and fruity character. It records blending, Marsala and vermouth uses. Its assertion of a Puglian origin is not adopted without further historical verification.
