Wine · Grape variety · Short entry
Sémillon
A white grape originating in the Bordeaux vineyards. With suitable sites and controlled yields it can make substantial dry whites as well as sweet wines.
Origins and the vine
Pl@ntGrape places Sémillon’s origin in Bordeaux and describes medium bunches with relatively large berries. The vine has moderate vigour, but production responds strongly to soil fertility. Its sheet identifies gravel and clay-limestone among suitable ground types, while warning that yields vary markedly with the site.
From grape to wine
The stated wine potential includes full-bodied dry whites with moderate or low acidity, suitable for barrel maturation and ageing. Sweet-wine potential is also documented. Those are style possibilities under favourable conditions, not fixed alcohol levels or instructions to pick all Sémillon at the same maturity.
