Bical

Bical is a white grape associated with Bairrada and Dão. In Dão, the name Borrado das Moscas is also used.

Identity and growing conditions

The Wines of Portugal account describes an early variety whose harvest timing is important. Picking too late can reduce acidity as potential alcohol rises; it also notes susceptibility to powdery mildew.

Wine styles and uses

Its wine descriptions include peach and apricot, with riper fruit impressions in warmer years. Bical may be matured with lees contact or in wood and is also used in Bairrada sparkling wines, including blends with Arinto.
