Baga
Baga is a Portuguese red grape closely associated with Bairrada and also grown elsewhere in the Beiras. Its growing cycle makes site and harvest weather important.
Identity and growing conditions
Wines of Portugal describes small, thick-skinned berries and late ripening. Good sun exposure is important, while autumn rain and rot can complicate harvest; vigorous foliage requires management.
Wine styles and uses
Well-ripened fruit can produce deeply coloured, tannic wines with marked acidity and berry or plum impressions. The profile also describes bottle development, rather than presenting youthful astringency as the only possible expression.
