Nero d’Avola

Nero d’Avola is the familiar Sicilian name for the registered variety Calabrese. These names belong in one entry, while the identity of historically named vineyard material still requires care.

Calabrese and Nero d’Avola

The Italian Vitis Database lists Nero d’Avola among Calabrese’s official synonyms. Its discussion also records substantial variation and historical naming ambiguity. A shared label therefore should not be used as proof that every old accession is genetically identical.

The vine and the wine

Rauscedo describes a vigorous vine with medium winged bunches and oval berries, suited to warm, dry conditions and deep soils without excessive fertility. Its general wine account includes substantial, spicy reds used alone or in blends. It does not prove a particular ancient migration or an exclusive geographic origin.
