Duras

A black grape of Gaillac, found almost nowhere else, with distinctive peppery wines. DNA shows it is a cross of Tressot and Savagnin, which makes it a half-sibling of Mondeuse Noire.

Gaillac's own grape

Pl@ntGrape says it comes from the Gaillac or Ariège area, and the Gaillac appellation file calls it probably native to the Gaillacois and present almost only there. Genetic analysis in Montpellier made it a cross of Savagnin and Tressot, a pedigree that VIVC lists as confirmed by markers.

It accumulates sugar well and gives moderately coloured but very distinctive, peppery wines. It is fairly susceptible to phomopsis, powdery mildew, mites and eutypa dieback. French plantings grew from 87 ha in 1958 to 1,063 ha in 2008, then fell to 794 ha in 2018.
