Bobal

Bobal is a Spanish red grape associated with Utiel-Requena and the upland Levante. The nursery suggests a Requena origin, without establishing an exact documented birthplace.

Identity and growing conditions

Rauscedo describes a vigorous, drought-tolerant vine with a five-lobed leaf and a conical, irregular bunch. Berries are medium-sized, rounded and somewhat flattened; the leaf underside is described as cottony.

Wine styles and uses

The profile describes coloured reds and fresh rosés with appreciable acidity and tannin. Its categorical statement against ageing is not adopted as a limit on all Bobal wines, and dated vineyard percentages are omitted.
